NHL 82-0 guide
The NHL and NBA play the exact same 82-game regular season, so the 82-0 challenge transfers to hockey perfectly: could an all-time lineup win every single game without a loss? No franchise has ever come close. The best regular season on record belongs to the 2022-23 Boston Bruins at 65-12-5, and the legendary 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens lost only eight times across an 80-game slate. That gap between the greatest real teams and a flawless record is exactly what makes the NHL 82-0 challenge so addictive — you are chasing a milestone hockey has never reached.
In this free hockey draft game you spin a random NHL team and decade, then draft one legend into each of six roster spots — left wing, center, right wing, a two-man defense pair, and a goaltender. Once your lineup is set, the engine projects your 82-game record and hands out a letter grade from S “PERFECT” down to F. Pick Classic to draft with stats on view, or Blind Draft to build from memory and reveal everything at the end. Either way, the underlying rating engine treats hockey with its own rules rather than reusing the basketball formula, which is why the goaltender slot below carries so much more weight than any single skater position.
Hockey’s perfect-season math is crueler than basketball’s because a single hot or cold goalie can swing a night on its own. That is why the goalie slot carries the heaviest weight in your team rating — an elite netminder like Patrick Roy, Dominik Hasek, or Andrei Vasilevskiy is often the difference between a contender and a genuine 82-0 threat.
The draft pool spans the 1980s through the 2020s and era-defining rosters: the Oilers dynasty, the 1990s Red Wings and Avalanche, the 2010s Blackhawks and Penguins, and today’s stars like McDavid’s rivals MacKinnon, Makar, and Kucherov. Every spin can pull a different franchise-and-era combination.
A perfect 82-0 hockey team is never just three scorers. You need a two-way center, wings who create and finish, a mobile defense pair that moves the puck and defends the rush, and a goalie who steals games. Cover every line and the cold nights stop turning into losses.
The safest way to chase 82-0 is to draft by job, not by name. Your center should either drive offense or win defensive matchups; your wings should give the line enough finishing to punish mistakes; your defense pair should combine a puck-mover with a shutdown presence. Because each spin gives you one player from a single team-and-era pool, the smart move is to fill your weakest remaining slot rather than stacking another scorer you do not need.
Save your best evaluations for the crease. Two forwards with similar goal totals can be nearly interchangeable, but the drop-off between an elite goalie and an average one is enormous in a game decided by one-goal margins. When a spin surfaces a legendary netminder and you still have the slot open, taking them is almost always the pick that moves your projected record the most. As you replay, you start to recognize which franchise-and-decade pools are deep enough to realistically threaten a flawless season.
Both leagues play an 82-game slate, but hockey has a mechanic the NBA does not: the tie-turned-shootout, and decades where a single stretch of overtime losses can quietly end a perfect-season bid without ever producing a regulation loss. A basketball game only ends one of two ways. A modern NHL game can end in regulation, overtime, or a shootout, which gives a flawless run more ways to slip than a simple win-loss format ever could. That is part of why no NHL club has ever seriously threatened 82-0, even in eras far more top-heavy than today’s salary-cap league.
The other reason is variance at the one position that matters most. A basketball team can survive a cold shooting night by leaning on defense or ball movement; a hockey team cannot fully insulate itself from a goalie who lets in a soft one. Across an 82-game season even the best netminders have off nights, and a single bad bounce is often the difference between a signature win and a shocking loss. That is exactly why this challenge weights the goalie slot so heavily — building a lineup that can survive a human goalie’s inevitable bad night is the whole game.
No — nothing close. The 1976-77 Canadiens hold the best points percentage and the 2022-23 Bruins hold the wins record at 65, still far short of a perfect season.
Same core loop, but hockey uses six roster slots including a goalie, and goaltending is weighted heaviest instead of a five-player basketball lineup.
Yes. It runs in your browser on desktop and mobile with no download or sign-up.
Hockey games can end in regulation, overtime, or a shootout, and a single soft goal can flip a result no matter how well the rest of the lineup plays. That extra variance is why the crease carries the heaviest weight of any slot in the NHL 82-0 rating — an elite goalie is the closest thing to insurance against the games your skaters cannot fully control.
