Team Mode guide
Every other mode on the site spins a random franchise for you. Team Mode flips that: you choose your team first — any of the thirty NBA franchises — and only the decade is left to chance. That single change turns the 82-0 challenge into a franchise-loyalty exercise. Instead of asking “which random roster can go 82-0,” you are asking “what is the best possible version of my team, across every era it has ever existed in?”
Under the hood, Team Mode uses the exact same engine as Classic Mode: full career stats are visible while you draft, the same Team OVR formula weighs scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks, and the same seven-tier grade scale decides whether your run lands as an S PERFECT season or slides toward F TANKING. The only variable Team Mode isolates is the decade — which means it is also the best mode for learning how deep, or how thin, a single franchise’s all-time talent pool really is.
Locking a team means every decade spin pulls from that same franchise’s history — the 1980s Lakers, the 1990s Bulls, the 2010s Warriors, and so on. Some franchises are loaded in nearly every era; others have one golden decade and several rebuilding ones.
A dynasty decade can hand you three all-timers at once, while a rebuilding decade for that same franchise might leave you drafting role players into star slots. Learning which decades are deep for your team is the core skill Team Mode teaches.
Because the franchise is fixed, every run doubles as research: over enough spins you build a mental map of your team’s best and worst eras, which is useful the next time that same decade comes up.
Because you cannot control which decade you land on, the biggest strategic lever in Team Mode is knowing your franchise’s history before you spin. If your team had one legendary decade, you already know which era spin you are hoping for — and on the decades that are not stacked, the smarter play is to draft for balance across the five-axis radar rather than force a star-heavy lineup the era simply cannot support. A thin decade with a well-balanced five will often out-grade a thin decade drafted purely by name recognition.
The Team OVR formula does not care which franchise a player is attached to, only what they contributed — so the same rules from Classic Mode apply once the decade is locked in: spread your defensive stats across positions instead of stacking them on one center, and prioritize whichever axis (Offense, Defense, Playmaking, Rebounding, or Chemistry) is weakest after your first couple of picks. Team Mode simply adds the extra layer of learning which of your franchise’s eras give you the raw material to do that in the first place.
Classic Mode spins both a franchise and a decade for you at random. Team Mode lets you lock the franchise first — pick your Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, or any of the thirty teams — and only the decade is randomized. The draft pool, the Team OVR formula, and the grading scale are identical; only how much control you have over the roster changes.
Because rosters are pulled era-by-era from real history, a franchise’s depth swings hard depending on which decade you land on. A team with a dynasty in one decade might have a thin, rebuilding roster in another, so the same franchise lock can produce a stacked S-tier five or a scrappy underdog run depending purely on the decade spin.
