16-0 NFL guide
A perfect 16-0 regular season has happened exactly once in NFL history: the 2007 New England Patriots ran the table across all 16 games behind Tom Brady and Randy Moss, setting the all-time single-season scoring record along the way. (They famously fell one game short of true immortality, losing Super Bowl XLII to the Giants to finish 18-1.) That makes 16-0 the historic benchmark for a flawless NFL regular season — a mark almost no other team has even threatened.
The 16-0 challenge turns that idea into a free draft game. Spin a random NFL team and era, draft an all-time legend into each of seven roster spots, and see whether your roster can match a perfect 16-0. Because the schedule is exactly 16 games, every single week has to go your way.
No 16-0 run happens without a legend pulling the strings at quarterback — the 2007 Patriots leaned on Brady and an offense that set the all-time scoring record to make history. Land a passer like Brady, Montana, or Manning here and the rest of your roster only has to hold up its end.
You get exactly seven spins to fill a quarterback, running back, two receivers, a tight end, an edge rusher, and a defensive back. Sixteen straight weeks leaves zero room for a dead roster spot — every position has to be capable of winning a game on its own.
The draft pool runs from the 1980s through today, so a Montana-led ’80s 49ers core can share a roster with a 2020s pass rusher. Combine legends who never actually lined up together and see whether the mashup can survive sixteen straight Sundays.
Anchor the roster at quarterback first — the 2007 Patriots only reached 16-0 because Brady and Moss turned an already good offense into a historic one, and that slot is weighted the same way here. Once the passer is locked in, draft by need: pair your receivers so they complement rather than duplicate each other, and grab a tight end who can move the chains on third down.
Do not let the offense carry the whole plan. Because each spin gives you one player from a single team-and-era pool, the smart move is to fill your weakest open slot rather than stack another skill-position star. An edge rusher who lives in the backfield and a ball-hawking defensive back both raise your grade meaningfully, and a 16-0 season built on both sides of the ball is far sturdier than one built on offense alone.
The 2007 New England Patriots — the only 16-0 regular season in NFL history. They then lost Super Bowl XLII to finish 18-1.
16-0 was a perfect season under the NFL’s old 16-game schedule. The league expanded to 17 games in 2021, so 16-0 is now a historical benchmark rather than the modern definition of perfect.
It depends on the era: 16-0 was perfect under the old 16-game schedule, while 17-0 is the modern perfect regular season since 2021 — and no team has reached it. 20-0 adds a full playoff run on top.
